As Hicks caught up to Gar and Rufe, he let out a war whoop that made Gar turn, scowling, in his saddle. Loud noises put Gar's nerves on edge, making him even more dangerous.

"You fool, don't you know better'n than to come up on me like that? Want yer head blowed off?" Gar chastened. Then he turned away, shaking his head slowly as if to wonder what he had done to deserve a man like Hicks. After a few minutes of silence, Gar again spoke up, "Had the girl headed back to town when you got there?"

"Uh, yeah. She was gone. Probably ain't stopped runnin' yet," Hicks laughed nervously.

"You didn't touch her, did you?" Gar raised his voice.

"Nope. I done just like you told me," Hicks said with a frown.

"Then, where'd them scratches on yer face come from?"

"I, uh, fell into a bramble tryin' to find my watch."

"You best be tellin' the truth," Gar warned, and turned back to study a crude map he held in his hand as they continued steadily toward Medicine Creek.

"Where's we headin, Gar?" Rufe finally interjected after being uncharacteristically quiet for nearly an hour.

.,Colorado. Jus like you always wanted, Rufe. To see where them mountains touch the sky," Gar said, pointing to the west, as he lit a cheroot.

"Then, how come we's headin' south?" Hicks asked. "Colorado's west of here"

"Southwest. An' we'll be turnin' when I say," Gar said as he seemed to be scanning the horizon for some elusive sign.

"Whatta you keep lookin' at the sky for, Gar?" Rufe asked.

"Trouble," Gar mumbled.

"What?" Rufe and Hicks spoke together.

"Storm's comin' fast! We'll be needin' some cover, soon. Now hush up and keep kickin' them ponies."
